JAPN 305 - Introduction to Japanese Culture & Civilization
Description: “This course introduces various aspects of Japanese culture, including history, geography, religion, government, politics, customs and traditions. After a broad historical overview beginning in prehistory, this course focuses on the Tokugawa period as the bedrock for understanding modern Japanese society as a mass society.”
In this course we took an in-depth look at Japanese society from a largely historical lens, exploring areas such as the social structures within feudal Japanese society such as samurai status, the everyday lives of nobles living in the meiji period through excerpts of the Tale of Genji, and even touched upon the native Japanese belief system of Shintoism in great depth.
We explored these topics of interest through frequent in-class group discussions, presentations, and in great depth in research based reports and essays.
